GROWING PARSNIPS IN CLAY SOIL

I'm trying to grow some parsnips but our soil is very heavy clay and retains a lot of water which seems to be causing them to not grow properly.

What can I do to help them grow better in future?

Hi PP – Firstly, I would incorporate lots of compost, homemade, bought, whatever, plus some sand to combat the clay. Those funny shaped veg come from the root hitting stones etc and heading off every which way. What I do is make a deep hole with my rake handle or anything long you can use as a dibber (or might be a crow bar in your case!) then fill with sieved compost and sow seed on the top. This has worked for me. Fingers crossed for you.
